Project Update: NEEDS Hand Pumps in Charsadda
An ADP volunteer recently visited the project to install hand pumps in villages in Charsadda and found that they were all fully functional, with positive feedback coming from the communities. The implementation of the project by NEEDS has been smooth, with team members working effectively within rigid community structures.
Current situation
In Gumbati, the hand pump is functional and in working condition. The people in the community responded positively when asked about the work done by NEEDS, especially because after the floods it became increasingly difficult to bring water from a far distance. Access to clean water has also ensured that the incidence of common water-borne diseases such as typhoid, hepatitus and diarrhea has decreased.
In Toota Kae, the committee president shared that the installation of the hand pumps has also improved the health of the community in this area. More than 40 households are now benefiting from the hand pumps and the clean water they are providing.
The situation is similar in Sangar, where 70 households are using the hand pump and its operation has been largely successful within the community. A local donated land for the hand pump site and reported that villagers have been using the water from pump not only for themselves, but also for their animals.
Sustainability
NEEDS has provided committees in communities with training and relevant tool kits in order to maintain the hand pumps. Furthermore, the team at NEEDS has remained in touch with the community to ensure any problems can be relayed.
Problems
In one village, it was noted that the condition of the pump was not particularly hygienic. This can be resolved by providing further training to ensure the hand pump remains clean and functions effectively.
