Fund Primary and Secondary Education for the Under-Privileged in Gujranwala

banner

Your donations will help to cover the construction of Al-Sohail Model School (primary and secondary level school).  The building will consist of 5 well-furnished class rooms along with a veranda. This school will serve about 200 children from low income communities of Mehran wala Dera (hamlet), Tahli Wala Dera (hamlet) and Shahan Wala Dera (hamlet). For the majority of students in this locale, Al-Sohail Model School is the only formal education opportunity available to them.

Why this campaign?

  1. ADP believes education is the only way to empower the marginalized segments of the society and to free them from the shackles of poverty. Al-Sohail Model School will yet be another effort to uplift the socio-economic status of the people of Village Harpoki.
  2. One of ADP’s key criteria for funding is ‘need’. The need for a formal school in this area is particularly acute. Al-Sohail Model School is currently a key fixture in the local community and this grant will help it to further its reach and impact.
  3. Sound primary and secondary education is the only way to ensure a path to higher education for these children. This will not only ensure a rise in the income and livelihood of an individual child but an increase in the living standards for his/her entire family.

Why this Project?

ADP has recently approved its second project under the public-private partnership umbrella. By supporting our partner NGO, Friends Development Organization (FDO), ADP is funding the construction of a primary and secondary level school for 175 students in Gujranwala, Punjab. The school is also supported by the Punjab Education Foundation’s Voucher Scheme Programme.

Al-Sohail Model School is located in Mehran wala Dera, Tehsil Kamoke, District Gujranwala where no other public or low-cost private schools operate. The level of need was one of the primary considerations for funding this project.  It will also cater to the hamlets surrounding it. These hamlets are away from towns and cities, consisting of 10-15 families, without basic necessities of urban societies. Their economic circle revolves around agriculture, livestock or bounded labour. Education projects like this are the only way to stipulate their present economic status out of the vicious circle of poverty.

Partner Profile

Friends Development Organization (FDO) is a non-government, non-profitable, non-political and independent organization, established in 1998 and registered in 2002 under the social welfare registration control ordinance 1961, with a mission to develop and uplift the living standard of low income families through education, health services and socio-economic empowerment in rural & urban societies of District Gujranwala.

Friends Development Organization facilitates and empowers the people in acquiring their basic needs, like: education, health, income Generation etc. without any discrimination on the basis of colour, creed, cast or religion.  It also trains/educates people towards, income generation, skill development, rural finance / management, legal & human rights and disaster mitigation.

FDO has been adopting participatory approach in all its programs since its creation along with promotion of local leadership. It has been organizing and liberating the underprivileged segments of the society, particularly women and children of low income families at the grassroots level by equipping them with skills and education.

 Impact

FDO currently runs five schools and one computer training institute namely  Sohail Bin Sadiq Model School, High Gait School,  Silah model school, Al-Sohail Model School and  Friends Computer Training Institute. FDO’s schools currently have a strength of 1029 (including Sohail Bin Saqib).  All FDO schools are registered with Punjab Education Department, Gujranwala.

FDO’s future objective is to increase the present strength of Al-Sohail Model School with the construction of appropriate school building along with improvements and new developments while keeping minimal fee to meet the expenditure of the school at no profit strategy.

Their long term goals is to further school building enhancements, initiate a collage for the students of village Harpoki, particularly girls to pursue higher education, a well- equipped library and a computer lab.

Investment Rational

Critical Need: The level of need was one of the primary considerations for funding this project. Al-Sohail Model School is located in Mehran wala Dera, Tehsil Kamoke, District Gujranwala where no other public or low-cost private schools operate. Through our evaluation and site visit it became clear that parents and community members greatly valued the school.

Effectiveness: On our site visit we found that FDO schools maintained a high quality of education, especially given the low resources they operate with. It’s our hope that the construction of a proper facility will continue to increase learning levels of the children.

Sustainability: FDO schools charge tuition and receive a PEF subsidy for low-income students. The PEF subsidy gives us confidence that FDO will continue to receive financial support for its work.

Credibility: During the evaluation process we conducted a number of reference call checks with individuals and organizations that have worked with FDO in the past. Since FDO works on a diverse range of development projects we found that community members had great respect and trust for the organization and its staff. In short, the people we spoke with felt that they were filling a void in their community.

Key Metrics

ADP will monitor the progress via the following key metrics:

  • Construction progress and budget updates
  • Student enrolment levels
  • Teacher and student attendance
  • Student assessments
  • Student-to-teacher ratio
  • On-going involvement with the government’s PEF program.

  • The FDO school construction is complete! Our site visit volunteer and team were very happy to see classes in full function, with teachers, students and parents working together to improve learning outcomes at the school. Parents mentioned that this school was a relief since there is no other school within the 20 km radius and FDO is providing the only quality schooling option for their children. FDO is also supported by the Punjab Education Foundation under the New School Program which allows students to receive private quality education at public cost.
