Folks,

A few months ago this EQ redevelopment proposal was sent to ADP by Dr. Nadeem Afridi; a member of APNE Association of Pakistani Physicians-- New England.

PROJECT SUMMARY

Name: Rebuilding Ayub Teaching Hospital (ATH) Abbottabad

Background

- 2005 EQ destroyed this hospital that was serving 1.5 million patients.
- Being the only public hospital in the region, the EQ load further deteriorated the remaining capacity of the hospital.
- In collaboration with a non-profit organization called IMEC -- International Medical Equipment Collaborative, this project will reequip multiple departments at Ayub Medical Hospital in Abbottabad.
- The project includes transportation, installation and maintenance of medical equipment from USA to Abbottabad.
- For a period of 3 years, IMEC will provide follow-up care of the equipment.

Medical Equipment List

Pediatric and intensive care equipment. This would include ventilators, monitors, sterilization equipment, beds, chairs, tables, ventilator support equipment, ready to use pediatric kits etc.

Equipment for a 6 to 8 bed emergency room and pathology department equipment. This would likely include sterilization equipment, computers, ophalmoscoes, auroscopes, stetesccopes, beds, chairs, tables, OR equipment, defibrillators, monitors, EKG machines etc.

Budget US $15,000

The funds will be transferred to IMEC, a non-profit based out of Boston that will pack, transport, install and perform followup care of the equipment -- http://www.imecamerica.org

Need

Following features in particular qualify this hospital in need for more urgent help.

1. It was damaged itself during the earthquake.
2. Many of its integral departments such as OBGYN (child delivery center), emergency room, and pediatrics department are very run down and broken such that even basic hygienic conditions are not being met.
3. The hospital that was supposed to last for at least another 10 years without further support was overused at an extraordinary rate because of the earthquake and now it lies in shambles.
4. The government has really ignored this urgent need.

The reason why this hospital is critical to rebuild is because it was at the center for care during the earthquake, providing care to thousands of patients in the aftermath of the acute trauma and continues to provide them with on going support.

Impact

ATH is a tertiary care hospital catering to almost a million people for advanced surgical and medical care (meaning patients requiring
advanced care such as complicated child births, trauma from motor vehicle accidents, children with difficult problems and cancer and orthopedic care). It is the only large civil hospital in that area and covers patients form as far of areas as upper Alai, Batagram, Balakot, Mansehra, Tandhiani, Basham, and Ugi.

Sustainability

Medical equipment typically has a long life. All equipment that will be installed at the hospital will be in working condition as certified by IMEC. Moreover, the project cost includes annual follow-up care of the equipment performed by IMEC organization for a period of 3 years.

Some more info on this project:

1) When are the funds for the next shipment needed by? (just so we know from a project execution stand-point)

The next shipment is getting ready to be shipped end of Feb or beginning of March.

2) Can we get a detailed budget outlining what part of the $15,000 will be spent on loading, transportation, installationg, training staff and follow-up care of the equipment?

Loading is a voluntary. I will be a part of this loading .
Transportation cost is 5K
Installation will be done by Abbottabad Medical Association (doctors) staff at Ayub Medical Hospital
Equipment procurement cost (picking from hospitals and shipping to their warehouse in Andover, MA) is 4 to 6K
Approximate equipment value that will be shipped in the container is 250K
Follow up visits is 4 to 6K

IMEC volunteers collect medical equipment that is being donated or discarded by hospitals. They typically rent trucks and labor to load and unload this equipment to their warehouse in Andover.

3) When was the assesment carried out by Dr. Afridi and has a more recent one been done since? (Just so we know that the need is still there and hasn't been fulfilled through other donors).

The most recent assessment was done last month when Dr Afridi was in Pakistan. Just an FYI, Dr Afridi is a young (late 30s) cardiovascular doctor who was already volunteering his time in Pakistan before earthquake. After earthquake, he has gone back 4 times to spend a month (each time) working in that region. He recently got involved with IMEC while organizing these shipments to Pakistan and has now become a full time IMEC volunteer.
