We have sent a team of doctors from Shalimar Hospital. Packages has sent
two trucks. Kafans are badly needed. At present two to three persons are
being buried in one kafan. It is true the retailers have increased
prices and things are in short supply. Blankets are needed as well. We
are also sending medicines. At present the law and order situation is
out of control and there is looting. People have also been held at gun
point who went to work as volunteers.

It is best to donate to Ehdi as they are working in the filed. The
windows of their vans have also been broken. Perhaps the army will do
something about controlling the law and order situation as it is an
impediment for the relief effort that we are all making.

i have heard of some of those sotries as well. But that is from 2-3 days ago. Now that more relief work has been put in and the Baluch regiment has moved in things are in much more control. If you want to send any supplies it is best to send them to an organiaztion working here because they have the best information regarding where to supply the goods and how to get them there.

Keep up the effort guys. A lot is happening right now, but what needs to be done is to sustain this effort (perhaps at a slightly relaxed pace) over the winter.

Here is an update from one of our members involved with LUMS relief work!

Hey Mahjabeen,

I seem to have missed your email asking for information :S sorry about that!
i saw an email from Maria - she might have updated you on whats been happening. Nevertheless, I'll paste an email here from the instructor who's mostly incharge of whats going on. It was sent out on Thursday.

Also, the urgent need now is for tents - not even for 4 by 4s. Tents and bedding.

UPDATE ON BAGH AND LUMS
Over the last 2 days I have received a lot of information and suggestions via e-mail and the phone on all that LUMS should or should not be doing. While I appreciate all of this, as well as the concern, I just wanted to clarify that LUMS is working in a very specific area (Bagh city as the distribution point for villages beyond Bagh) and through a very specific network (former students from the area that have set up a delivery and distribution chain, and Islamic Relief, both of whom are coordinating with the Army in that area, so it is all a coordinated effort) and that we are trying to make sure that we respond directly and as quickly as possible to specific demands that are being made in that area only. Therefore, the situation in most other places may not be relevant to Bagh as well. Remember that this is a large area that has been affected, and the situation in Bagh, Mansehra, Balakot, Rawalakot and Muzaffarabad varies greatly.

So, the situation in Bagh essentially is that the donations are all getting to the base camp in Bagh itself, where the army is working with the local people (our main contact) and Islamic Relief is collecting it. The army is also airlifting things to this camp. There is no looting going on right now, and they have discovered a route through which they got our supplies to the base camp in Bagh in 4 hours 30 mins, rather than the 12 hours that other trucks are taking on the main routes. They have also put our team of trekkers in touch with the army commander there who will now coordinate their movement (we have received no direct news from them yet). The settlement pattern in the area was also different and less concentrated compared to the cities, so that the health situation and needs are also apparently different.

Now the issue is that while the stuff has all arrived in Bagh okay and will continue to do so (fingers crossed), they need a lot of help in distributing it further. Just relying on trekkers on foot is taking too long and is proving ineffective, and they have no vehicles. They have now asked for cars (potohars, but also santro, cultus (that is what our team went on last night) with drivers and trekkers, so that they can take the stuff up as far as the road allows from Bagh and then trek from there, rather than from Bagh itself. This is my understanding of the situation so far. This is an urgent appeal, and they have called thrice to say that there is no use of this stuff getting across and then not reaching the villages beyond. This effective distribution is also the true test of the success and effectiveness of LUMS's contribution. We have to complete the process of material collecting at the sports complex in LUMS and then reaching a remote village soon after, rather than leaving it half way.

I hope this explains the LUMS effort to the curious and the effectiveness of LUMS acting on its own to the concerned.

Regards, Shandana.

I realize that we have alot of parallel efforts here in Pakistan, but if anyone knows people who have blankets that they haven't sent up through one way or another, please ask them to send them to LUMS. The LUMS Disaster Relief Fund could really use them.

Also - tents.

Thanks
Angbeen.
