The ADP Cal team has been planning an earthquake "Restaurant Week" for a while now which is gathering momentum. The SA Quake alliance is interested in in making this their next initiative after the nationwide vigils and rolling it out simultaneously in 5-6 cities in mid-December. ADP would lead the event.

If you are interested in volunteering or holding this event in your city, please e-mail Mahjabeen at mahjq@yahoo.com.

Restaurant "EQ Week"

Concept
Our restaurant is proud to be a sponsor of "EQ Week". Along with 40 Bay Area restaurants, we are donating a portion of our sales between December 12th-18th to the victims of the earthquake in Pakistan. A portion of the proceeds from your meal will go directly to charities working on immediate as well as long-term relief for the victims.

Pitch to Restaurants
- Situation in Pakistan is dire, with an urgent need for funds (give stats)
- One local restaurant doubled sales through a similar event on one day. We expect a 15-20% increase in sales, driven by lots of publicity

Marketing plan
* Media coverage in Chronicle, NY Times, other papers
* Dedicated web site (something like www.eqdine.com)
* Have Open Table advertise alongside participating restaurants (Mamoon knows CEO)
* E-mails sent out on local South Asian lists (PSAs, OPEN etc)
* Advertising on South Asian community web sites (ADP, Pakistan Link, OPEN etc)
* Posters and flyers at key points in the city
* Other?

Branding
"Dine Out to Save a Life"
"Earthquake Week"
"EQ Week"

Charities
Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international independent medical humanitarian organization that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural or man-made disasters, or exclusion from health care in more than 70 countries. MSF currently has over 250 staff members working on earthquake relief in Pakistan. For more, visit www.DoctorsWithoutBorders.org

Association for the Development of Pakistan is a US-based nonprofit that supports development projects in Pakistan across a broad range of sectors. ADP is funding earthquake relief efforts via local partner NGOs and is focusing on immediate provision of shelter, as well as long-term redevelopment. For more, visit www.DevelopPakistan.org

Note: We feel an international charity is important to sign up non-Pakistani restaurants.

Progress to date
- Compiled a list of 50 SF restaurants based on popularity, cuisine and neighborhood. Have verbal agreements from 2 Pakistani restaurants already
- Ali Mumtaz at Young & Rubicam in SF is currently working on publicity materials
- ADP Cal member will work on setting up web site with guidance from Ali
- The plan is to have a materials pack finalized by next Sunday (Nov 20th)

Omar and Justin had asked some good questions about the week, which I've tried to answer below. We are still in the planning stages here, so none of this is final:

- This will require a fair bit of effort. We anticipate teams of 5-10 people in any given city. Cal folks will take the lead in the upfront planning and materials development, but volunteers will have to work on signing up restaurants in their cities and marketing.

- We hope to sign up 20-50 restaurants in the Bay Area and raise $500-$1k per restaurant, which means we are looking at a $10k-$50k range depending on how successful we are

- We hope to get good media coverage, but there's a real chicken and egg argument. NY Times, SF Chronicle etc will be interested only if this is big enough.

- We would very much like it to be a simultaneous national event to make it big enough for the media. The date of 12/12-12/18 is tentative. We will make a call in 10 days on whether it gives us enough time

- DWB (or another int'l charity) and ADP will be the sole beneficiaries of the event

- SA Quake will be helping us get in touch with volunteers in different cities and their PR firm can work on getting media coverage. We will however have to play the central coorindating role and lead the effort.

- Funds will go to immediate relief as well as redevelopment, but will be earmarked for earthquake work

- We are targetting desi and non-desi restaurants
