FYI.
Dear all,
A group of people from the US, UK and Pakistan have started a drive to collect tents for the victims of the South Asia Earthquake. At the moment, the most dire need is for shelter and medicine. While many doctors have already gone to the affected areas, they can't help without shelter. According to BBC, the need for tents is 100,000 and so far only about 18,000 tents have reached te affected areas.
A bunch of us have been in touch with local NGOs and companies like Unilever, Omer Asghar Development Foundation and the Pak Shaheen Group, who are using their local networks to get tents to remote villages where aid has still not reached. In coordination with a US organization called Development in Literacy's South Asia Earthquake, we have set up a blog where people can donate money. The funds will be used to buy tents from the Coleman group, among other, which DIL is coorindating with, that is giving us tents at a discount. Upto now, we have placed orders for 18 tents costing 60,000 rupees, $1000. These tents are all-weather waterproof tents that can house up to 5-7 people. Inshahallah, the shipment will be in Pakistan in three days, where our contacts are coordinating to ensure everything runs smoothly.
I know that people have already received thousands of emails for funding, and are unsure where to put it all. Well, this is a great idea, and basically, we don't want the money, we just want the tents. For people who are unsure about this, you can contact the Coleman group at: 316-832-6189. and order tents yourself, however, discounts are larger in bulk.
If this idea appeals to you, please go to: http://tentdrive.blogspot.com/ The site also has more details about the drive.
For more info or concerns, visit the site or email me. Any help at this point would go a VERY LONG WAY. Many of us from that region feel frsutrated for being unable to help. This is your chance. If you can't afford to donate funds, please forward this message to people who you think might be able to help.
Thank you and best wishes,
